Steps You Can Take For Safety on the Move
Mark your calendars! June 9th is National Forklift Safety Day (NFSD) and we hope you are as excited for it as we are! Sponsored by the Industrial Truck Association (ITA), this day is a great reminder of how important it is to stay safe while operating forklifts.
Proper use and great operator training can help you perform forklift tasks safely and easily.
And Heubel is here to help! In honor of NFSD, we’re sharing tips on how both operators and pedestrians can safely work with and around forklifts.
How can operators stay safe?
- Look out for pedestrians and give them the right of way.
- Don’t drive close to people or machinery (unless it’s required for the task).
- Always look in the direction you’re traveling.
- Come to a complete stop and sound the horn at intersections and crosswalks. Be sure there is no oncoming traffic before resuming driving.
- Approach and exit aisles slowly.
How can pedestrians stay safe?
- Use pedestrian walkways to make room for operating machinery.
- Stop, look, and listen for incoming traffic.
- When a truck is nearby, make eye contact with the driver to make sure he or she is aware that you are around.
- Remember that trucks need time to come to a stop — they won’t be able to slam on their brakes if you walk right in front of them.
- Stay clear of forklifts while they are in operation.
Forklifts should make your business easier — and when you work with them the right way, they are the perfect tools for making the workplace safe and efficient.
